Professional Background
Jessica Klimesh is a US-based writer, editor, and writing coach. She launched JEK Proofreading and Editing, LLC in January 2019 after teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) and writing classes in varying capacities, including at the university level, for 5+ years. Even during her earlier career in retail management, Jessica was drawn to helping others with writing and editing and did freelance work for many years before turning it into a full-time career. She is an active member of the EFA (Editorial Freelancers Association).
Creative Writing
Jessica’s creative writing has been published in a variety of online and print journals, and she has received nominations for the Pushcart Prize, Best Microfiction, Best Small Fictions, and Best of the Net. She won 3rd prize in South Shore Review‘s 2023 flash fiction contest, and 1st prize in Gooseberry Pie Lit‘s 2024 microfiction contest. More recently, her story “Jane Jane Jane Jane Jane” was shortlisted in The Berlin Literary Review‘s 2024 flash fiction contest. You can find a full list of her publications here.
In 2007, Jessica founded the Toledo [Ohio] Writers’ Workshop, which she facilitated until mid-2015. The group continues to be active.
She currently hosts a weekly virtual “write night” called Together Apart, which she started to help maintain her writing practice at the beginning of the pandemic. It proved so beneficial that she has continued hosting the weekly group.
Education and Continuing Professional Development
With master’s degrees in both English (with an ESL/academic writing focus) and Creative Writing (with a fiction focus), graduate certificates in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and International Scientific and Technical Communication, and an undergraduate degree in Communications, Jessica has a broad and comprehensive writing and editing background. She also successfully completed the Proofread Anywhere general proofreading course and regularly takes writing and editing courses/workshops to maintain and refine her skills. Courses she’s taken include Editing Memoir with Tanya Gold, Developmental Editing (through the EFA), two creative nonfiction writing workshops (through Cleaver), and a wide variety of fiction workshops (typically with a focus on flash fiction).
