Editing vs. Coaching

Sometimes you don’t need an editor; sometimes you need a writing coach who can offer you guidance and/or editorial feedback.

Unlike straight editing, coaching provides a more interactive approach to the revision process: guiding, mentoring, and supporting you in your creative practice.

There are many reasons why a writing coach may be just what you need.

Are You “Stuck” in the Writing or Revision Process?

Do you have an idea but don’t know how to proceed, or even how to start? Sometimes talking out an idea is all you need.

Or maybe you’ve received a developmental edit or other feedback and are overwhelmed with what to do next, how to apply the feedback.

Regardless of how experienced you are (or aren’t) as a writer, sometimes you just need someone to guide you through the writing process.

How Does It Work?

My coaching sessions are tailored to your specific needs and may involve simply talking through an idea.

Or maybe you need more specific guidance, e.g., “homework” and accountability, including editorial feedback. I can provide that, too!

If you are working on a specific project, you will usually send me the manuscript to review before our Zoom session (but this may depend on what your goals and needs are).

As a writing coach, I work to embody the tenets of Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process so that your voice and your vision for the work are retained.

Coaching Is Cost-Effective!

Another benefit of using a writing coach is that it can be a more economical approach to revision since it’s less time-intensive on my end than editing is. It is also ideal for smaller projects, e.g., flash fiction, short stories, and personal essays.

Ready to Try It?

Learn more, get a price quote, and book a coaching session by contacting me today. Please include, if applicable, the general details of your project (including title, genre (e.g., fiction or nonfiction), a short description, and the current word count).

I may be the right writing coach for you if any of the following are true:

  • Maintaining your authorial voice and vision is essential to you.
  • You’re working on prose poetry or short fiction/creative nonfiction.
  • You consider your writing “literary,” “experimental,” or hybrid in some way and want someone who can help you realize your unique vision for a piece/manuscript without imposing prescriptive conventions on your writing.
  • You’ve received feedback on a novel or other longer creative work and don’t know what to do next.
  • You want to improve as a writer and/or you have specific goals you want to meet, e.g., get published in a literary journal.
  • You consider yourself a strong writer.

Coaching sessions are typically done via Zoom in one-hour time slots.
